AI Clinical Notes Built for NHS Dental Practices

Reduce your admin burden by up to 70%. Speak naturally during consultations and let AI generate structured, GDC-compliant clinical notes — so you can spend more time with patients and less time typing.

The NHS admin problem

NHS dentists are under more pressure than ever. UDA targets, shrinking appointment times, and mounting regulatory requirements mean that clinical documentation has become a significant burden.

1–2 hrs

Average time NHS dentists spend on clinical notes each day, often after hours. Studies consistently report that dentists spend more time on paperwork than they would like, with many completing notes at home in the evenings.

76%

Of dentists report that administrative burden is a major source of stress and dissatisfaction, according to BDA surveys. Documentation workload is a leading driver of burnout in NHS dentistry.

25–30

Patients seen per day in a typical NHS practice. Each one requires clinical notes that meet GDC record-keeping standards. That is 25 to 30 sets of notes written under time pressure.

How OpenDentist helps

A simple four-step workflow that fits around your existing clinical routine. No change to how you practice — just less time writing notes.

1

Record the consultation

Place your microphone in the surgery and begin recording. Speak naturally to your patient — discuss their complaint, take a history, perform your examination, and explain your findings. There is no need to change your clinical workflow.

2

AI transcription

Advanced speech recognition converts the recording into a text transcript with speaker identification. A live transcript panel shows you what is being captured in real time, so you can verify accuracy during the appointment.

3

Structured notes generation

The AI analyses the transcript and generates structured clinical notes matching your template — presenting complaint, history, examination findings, BPE, diagnosis, treatment plan, and more. Cross-field consistency checks ensure that clinical findings are coherent.

4

Review and approve

Review the notes in the structured editor. Fields with AI reasoning are highlighted so you can quickly verify inferences. Edit anything that needs adjusting, then copy the notes to your practice management system with one click.

Compliance and data security

Built from the ground up for UK healthcare data requirements.

GDPR compliant

OpenDentist processes data in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation. Patient audio and notes data is stored exclusively on UK-based AWS servers. We do not sell or share patient data with third parties. You can request data deletion at any time.

UK data residency

All infrastructure runs in the AWS eu-west-2 (London) region. Audio recordings, transcripts, and clinical notes never leave the UK. Our database is hosted on Amazon RDS in the same region, with automated backups and encryption at rest.

Encrypted everywhere

All data is encrypted in transit using TLS 1.2+ and at rest using AES-256. Audio files in S3 use server-side encryption. Session-based authentication with httpOnly cookies means no tokens are stored in the browser that could be intercepted.

Audio opt-out

If your practice policy does not permit audio storage, you can disable it in your account settings. When disabled, audio is streamed directly to the transcription service and discarded immediately. No audio file is ever saved. You remain in complete control.

Meeting GDC record-keeping standards

The General Dental Council requires comprehensive clinical records. OpenDentist generates notes with the structured sections that GDC guidance expects.

NHS-specific questions

OpenDentist is a clinical documentation tool that assists with note-taking. It does not make clinical decisions or diagnoses. The dentist remains fully responsible for reviewing and approving all generated notes before they become part of the patient record. Many NHS dentists already use dictation and transcription tools — OpenDentist extends this with AI-powered structuring.
OpenDentist generates structured notes that you can copy to your clipboard with one click and paste directly into SOE, R4, Dentally, or any other practice management system. We are exploring direct integrations — get in touch if this is important to your practice.
All data is stored on AWS servers in the UK (eu-west-2 London region). Audio recordings are encrypted at rest using AES-256 and in transit using TLS 1.2+. We do not transfer patient data outside the UK. You can opt out of audio storage entirely if your practice policy requires it.
Yes. OpenDentist works for all appointment types — Band 1 examinations, Band 2 treatments, Band 3 complex work, urgent appointments, and private consultations. The AI adapts to whatever is discussed during the appointment and structures the notes accordingly using your chosen template.
You always review the notes before they are finalised. The structured editor highlights fields where the AI has made clinical inferences, with confidence indicators and reasoning explanations. You can edit any field directly. The AI-generated version is saved separately so you can always see what was changed. The dentist is always the final authority on the clinical record.
